Vampire Bat

This fly helped me win the 2025 Halloween fly tying event help by Ludvig flies on social media.

Made from some 'unusual source' materials and tied with fly tying techniques. This fly ended up resembling an engineering project at times. The only glue used it to attach the membrane for the wings to the tied frame. The wings are tied onto the hook in a traditional manner as are the rest of the materials.

It started as an idea from a comment made by a friend about tying a bat. I spent some time on the design and realised this would not be an easy fly to tie and would require some serious out of the box thinking to still class it as a tied fly.

This fly has seen people accuse me of gluing dead bats to fishing hooks and has certainly been a talking point. To my knowledge there is no other fly that resembles it in the world at the moment.
